What Are Blind Flanges?

Blind Flange is a solid flange without a center hole used to close the port of a pipe, vessel or valve to stop the flow of media, commonly used in system isolation, testing or maintenance scenarios. This type of flange is available in all sizes and classes, and may use a flat, raised, or ring-type joint face.

A blind flange can replace a butt weld cap in case an extension of the piping line is required, or in case a piping inspection is required (remove the blind flange to access the pipe interior). This type of flange can also be used as the rod access point on drain systems. Depending upon the application, a blind flange may be drilled and used as a slip-on flange, or tapped and used as a threaded flange.

Blind Flange is a core component for isolation and safety in piping systems due to its reliable sealing and high pressure resistance, especially in industrial applications where tight sealing or frequent maintenance is required.

Blind Flange Structural Features:

Blind Flanges

- No Center Hole: Solid disc construction that completely encloses the pipe or equipment port.

- Distribution of bolt holes: Uniform distribution of bolt holes around the edge, bolted to the paired flanges.

- Sealing surface type: usually raised face (RF), ring joint face (RTJ) or flat face (FF), selected according to pressure requirements.

- Thickness design: Thickness increases with pressure rating, high pressure scenarios require thickening to withstand internal loads.

Blind Flanges Core Advantages:

- Completely sealed: complete blockage of media flow ensures isolation security.

- High Pressure Resistance: Solid construction with no weak points, suitable for high pressure or extreme temperature systems (e.g. steam, chemical reactors).

- Flexible installation: no welding required, quick mounting or dismounting by bolts, easy to test or overhaul the system in sections.

- Reusability: Can be disassembled and reassembled multiple times, suitable for temporary closures or staged construction scenarios.

- Material adaptability: carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy and other materials are available to adapt to corrosive environments.

Applications of Aluminum Blind Flanges:

- Pipe End Closure: Temporary sealing of pipe ports reserved for future expansion.

- System Isolation and Testing: Isolation of specific pipe sections for maintenance or hydro/gas tightness testing.

- High Pressure Vessels: Manhole or inspection port sealing for reactors, heat exchangers, boilers.

- Chemical & Oil & Gas: Long-term closure of strongly corrosive, flammable and explosive media (e.g. tank head sealing).

- Temporary protection: port protection of unconnected pipelines during construction to prevent foreign objects from entering.
